Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Pondicherry

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Pondicherry

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesusis found on the South Boulevard, and it’s an oriental approach for the Gothic architecture. There are multiple things that make it stand out, with the stained rare glass panels being a very important part of it. Recently, this has become a very important place for Christians that want to enjoy a pilgrimage in the region. One of the major reasons is the great look offered by this Church and the outstanding visuals that you just can’t really find anywhere else at this time. If you’re a fan of browsing great locations and want incredible visuals, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is something you do not want to miss.

The Archbishop Mgr.Gandy chose to consecrate the Archdiocese of Pondicherry to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1895. The idea behind this was to create a church devoted solely to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. And it does work well from that perspective. The church was started by the Rev. Fr. Fourcaud in 1902 in the southern region. The major opening was held on the 17th of December in 1907 and a new parish that surrounds the Church was created in 1908 as well.

Centenary celebrations

Since the region celebrated a lot of things recently, it’s important to note that the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has also celebrated its centenary in the past decade. It’s insane to have something this old in any location, let alone in an older colony. For many colonial locations, you will find it very hard to figure out the right situation and place to focus on. But yes, the celebrations here were quite distinct, and you will feel amazing to see the huge amount of work and focus that went into this.

That’s maybe the best thing about a centenary like this is that at the end of June 2009 there was a request to be placed via the Telesphore Toppo, President of CBCI, to check the Holy See for the elevation of the Church. The Holy See made the church a minor basilica, and there even was a papal brief on the 24th of June 2011 which arrived at the archbishop house.

Mgr. Antony Anandarayar, Archbishop of Pondicherry and Cuddalore announced this on July 29th, 2011. The Papal Nuncio to India, Salvatore Pennacchio came in September and visited the basilica, and he declared it as a basilica created in the name of the holy see. Rector Rev.Fr. S. Maria Joseph is the one that’s considered the head of the basilica.
